Philip has prepared conservation plans, management plans and heritage impact statements for sites ranging from monastic ruins to Cold War airfields. Clients include the National Trust, English Heritage, the Home Office, private estates and local authorities. He has also carried out wider studies of themes like historic routes, as well as designing period planting schemes. He trained initially as a botanist and landscape architect, but an increasing interest in landscape history led him to study for a MA and PhD at the Centre for English Local History at Leicester University.
He worked for a landscape practice between 1987 and 1998, dealing with infrastructure projects as well as historic landscapes and landscape management. Philip formed acta in 1998 as a practice specialising in the research on, and conservation of, landscapes and buildings. Philip is director of acta.
